Conference facilities:
Initially, the UKAEA's work at Culham specialised in nuclear fusion and later this was a factor in the decision to locate the European Community's fusion project JET (Joint European Torus) at Culham. In 1995, the commercial division of the UKAEA was privatised as AEA Technology and, with the arrival of new organisations, the business activities at Culham now range from environmental research and consultancy to space technology. Culham Science Centre, as it is now known, has thus become a major centre of commercial science an technology business as well as a unique focus for the European fusion research programmes. Culham Science Centre occupies part of what was previously the Royal Naval Air Station, HMS Hornbill. In 1959 the UKAEA decided to move the Fusion research teams from their existing sites, to one new laboratory on the redundant airfield site. Once the construction of office and laboratory space was completed in 1963 the site became known as Culham Laboratory.
