About the elvetham:
(ref: SV843)
Venue description:
An entry in the Domesday book quotes Hugh de Port as holding the land at
Elvetham. In 1403 Henry IV granted a license to enclose a park of 300 acres.
Elvetham then passed into the possession of the Seymour family who in 1591
invited Queen Elizabeth I to enjoy four days of magnificent entertainment at
Elvetham, it was at this time she planted a fine oak tree which still stands in
the park today. In 1860 Reynolds Calthorpe rebuilt Elvetham Hall at a cost of #70,000
(architect Samuel Teulon) and it remained as home to the Calthorpe family until
1959 when it was sold to ICI. In 1965 the Kaye family (Lansing Bagnell) acquired
the Hall, developing Elvetham into a conference and management training centre.
In August 2001, in a private sale, the Dare family (The Petersham, Richmond)
with others purchased Elvetham Hall. Now renamed The Elvetham its history
continues.
