Avington Park, Winchester

This large brick house occupies an idyllic site in the lush meadows of the Itchen valley, praised by the often critical William Cobbett as 'one of the prettiest places in the country'. The land belonged to Winchester Cathedral during the Middle Ages, and was seized by the King at the Reformation before being sold to Edmund Clerk, whose descendants lived there until 1665. The manor was then bought by Georges Brydges (d.1713), one of Charles 11's courtiers, and the facade of the house as we see it today is essentially his. At the centre is a giant Tuscan portico, not unlike that of The Vyne (q.v.), and on either side are four-bay wings; the two bays on either side of the portico may stand on the site of the wings of the previous house, but the other bays are entirely of Brydges' time. The work could date from the 1670's, with some alterations (eg. the segment-headed sash windows) following the early 18C, but there is no firm evidence, and the architect remains unknown.
